The Finished Room

The Finished Room After a two-week remodel, what was a dark, contractor-grade finished attic is currently a shiny, happy place for playing matches, experimentation with hosting and crafts sleepovers. Rather than choosing trendy or popular palettes or motifs, a fresh, transitional approach was chosen by mixing sea-foam green with a grassy shade of green, then combining conventional and contemporary design fashions for something unique and current.

Before Figuring out how to best utilize the 26' X 14' loft area of their new-construction residence, the homeowners of this traditional Tennessee two-story Colonial simply stuffed it with leftover college furniture before deciding to redesign it as a common place for their sons to play and sleep. To guarantee the space felt bright and light, they'd replace the wall-to-wall carpet with white laminate, paint the walls a cheery colour of sea-foam green, and also include custom storage and sleeping solutions.

Architectural Bunk Beds The biggest splurge and many involved element of the attic's remodel was its habit architectural bunk bed. Created to look more as a permanent arrangement than a freestanding piece of furniture, the contemporary masterpiece was created from basic lumber and decorative pine planks. All in all, the bed took four full days to trim, build, sand and paint. To ensure longevity, it had been painted ultra-white in a semigloss finish using an HVLP paint sprayer. If the palette eventually alter as the boys grow, the ultra-white will work nicely with any fresh colour combination.

Integrated Cubby Steps Keeping in mind how important storage is for young boys with enormous amounts of toys, steps leading up to the top bunk were set up along the edge of their bed in the form of piled, open-front cubbies.

Pullout Trundle Since the boys grow, their interest in actions is sure to change. And later on, when one is heading off to college, another will still have three years left in the area by himself. To add extra hangout space should the base bunk become no more desired, the mattress of the lower bunk sits on a trundle which rolls out completely, making an additional personal space for lounging, gathering or doing homework.

Graphic Patterns To groom the beds into classic boy style with a fresh, contemporary spin, blue-and-white gingham pillows were blended using a green-and-white trellis pattern and a duvet featuring white and green pinstripes.

Integrated Windows The multipurpose room was developed to feel open and airy. To ensure that the boys do not feel shut off if lying in bed, windows have been integrated along the front as well as the sides. Should Mom or Dad want their focus, the boys may see and chat with them via the integrated windows. Additionally, the ledges of the windows were created chunky enough to maintain the boys' favorite Matchbox cars and action figures.

Privacy Drapes The multipurpose area has plenty of natural light streaming in through its three windows. To help restrain the early morning beams and offer each brother privacy whilst sleeping, custom draperies generated from army-green linen were stitched, subsequently installed on hospital paths mounted across the tops of the rectal window openings.

Dutch Door On afternoons and evenings, the multipurpose room is occupied by both boys and their playmates. Since young boys are known for rambunctiousness and running around endlessly, they're kept at bay safely thanks to a door installed at the area's entry. To maintain the kids contained inside, the bottom half of the door usually remains closed while the top half stays open, allowing parents to keep an eye on the kids from a distance.

Repurposed Toy Hardware For a touch of the unexpected, the existing hardware of the dresser was replaced using habit pulls made by sawing rubber action figures in half, then attaching them into the existing holes.

Entry Area Upon entrance to the multipurpose room, the boys have been greeted by a grassy-green dresser (picked up in a flea market, sanded and repainted) that holds their day-to-day faculty, playground and gym clothing. Although it might appear insignificant at first, appropriate placement of storage may have a enormous impact on maintaining a kid's room neat and tidy. With everyday clothes kept right close to the entry, the boys can seamlessly get dressed, then make their way out of the room and away to school. While the dresser keeps their casual clothes neatly kept and out of sight, a set of wall hooks was installed along with the architectural bunk bed to keep backpacks off the floor and within arm's reach.

White Laminate Flooring Wall-to-wall carpeting, while gentle, isn't always the best flooring alternative for spaces occupied by busy boys. Since the area is used for innovative crafting projects as well as playtime activities, the existing wall-to-wall carpeting was replaced using a cost-effective ultra-white laminate floating floor. When the present carpet and padding were eliminated, a foam underlay has been unrolled before the tongue-and-groove boards were attached to one another, cut to size, then staggered. If anything melt on the ground, it may just be consumed with a sponge.

Midcentury-Modern Globe Pendants During the daytime the multipurpose room remains bright and cheery on account of the light streaming in from the three windows. At night the space is maintained lit by a trio of oversized midcentury-modern pendants that cast a flattering, diffused glow on the room. When considering midcentury globes to your home, remember that many are available in glass and plastic versions. To be used in rooms where roughhousing is very likely to happen, it's best to decide on plastic fashions instead of glass.

Three Zones The space program of the multipurpose room consists of 3 zones: sleeping, activity and storage.

Felt Activity Wall Space preparation played a major part in the achievement of the remodeled attic. In other words eight-foot-wide area of dead space to good use, it had been transformed into a sensed action wall. To be able to make this, batting has been cut to size, then attached with spray adhesive prior to being coated by white felt secured to the wall using hot glue. Colored felt was then cut to size with scissors to make an assortment of objects, landscapes and characters.

Closet Reading Nook It's uncommon for many attics to include closets. Considering that the remodeled space was intended to be used as a bedroom as well as a playspace, appropriate closets were needed to store apparel shirts, pants and coats. To include cupboard space and offer the boys an additional spot to read books, the wall across the front part of the area was framed with 2 X 4 lumber, hinged for two doorways, then clad with beadboard before a central window chair was inserted and all surfaces were coated with ultra-white semigloss latex paint. When friends come over, the whole center of the room can be left expand open for ample space to lay out games and participate in activities.

Wooden Taxidermy For a classic, masculine spin, wooden taxidermy was created for the boys' space by tracing shapes to two-inch-thick bamboo planks using a pencil, then cutting them out using a decoration, sanding and then adding a whitewashed finish for a clean look. Picture hanging wire is connected to the rear for easy, level installation.

Concealed Closet Doors For a seamless look, the closet doors are covered in the same beadboard which wraps the walls of their custom cabinets. When the doors have been closed, all the two closets take on the look of architectural focal points. The ultra-white coloring of these closets helps reflect light on the bold-painted sea-foam walls, resulting in a diffused appearance which softens the intensity of wall color. When utilizing minty tones walls, bear in mind that they can actually change the colors of other items within the area. Contrasting minty colors with glowing white and natural light will aid in a more balanced look.

Open Closet Doors Once opened, the cabinets show two hanging rods in addition to an inside painted the exact same colour of sea-foam green since the ceiling and walls. Many designers suggest painting the interiors of cabinets the same color for a room's walls to produce the closet feel to be an extension of the room. Another thought involves painting the interiors of cabinets a bold contrasting shade, or offering them a distinct identity with wallpaper.

Double-Hang Rods To make the most of interior of the two cabinets, two sticks were wrapped spaced three feet apart. This enables lots of hanging space for tops and pants today, with any additional room eventually being used when the boys become teens and their garments increase in size. To keep the structural integrity of dress shirts and pants intact, wooden vases were used rather than vinyl styles. By switching plastic or wire hangers out for aluminum or wooden styles, the overall appearance of a closet can instantly be awarded high-end appeal.

Window Seat The small window seat between both closets was made with 2X4 lumber, paint-grade plywood and beadboard. To be able to make the seat practical for kids and parents, it's a thickness of 20", which is excellent for adult-sized and kid-sized legs to reach the ground when seated.

Canvas Window Shades To assist with light control, the 3 windows of the multipurpose area are dressed with green-and-white striped Roman colors made from yarn. Since rooms inhabited by busy boys require more durability, the canvas will maintain up to any harsh pulls or messy fingers as it is wipeable and springy.

Dormers In its original state, the inset regions around the dormers have been a waste of space. To give these areas a true goal, they were converted into two different assignments nooks complete with custom floating desks. To make the custom cushions, original 2X4 timber and paint-grade plywood were both cut to size, mitered, attached with a nail gun, then sanded and painted.

Homework Nooks Every one of the two homework nook's floating desks were configured with sufficient depth to accommodate games and books in addition to notebook and desktop computers when the boys are old enough to use them for college. Instead of pairing the desks together with stained children's seats, midcentury-modern Bertoia seats were added.

Repurposed Play Table For a designated place to work on crafts, draw and color with crayons, a custom play table was created from an old coffee table cut down to size with a saw, sanded, then painted white and green. The child-sized seats were picked up at a flea market, sanded, painted and decoupaged with classic maps.

Integrated Art Supply Storage Maintaining storage in mind, the table has been designed with an integrated jar for maintaining crayons, markers and pens stored neatly and within arm's reach. To bring the bowl, a jigsaw was used to cut a hole out in the middle of the table, a mixing bowl with a lip on the top border was dropped. The key to doing this successfully is choosing a bowl using a deep sufficient lip to help keep the bowl from slipping through the gap.
