Home Exterior

Home Exterior "Throughout the day, you truly can enjoy the proportions of Neutra's exterior design," said Casale. "I can never wait to open the garage door, because the rear wall is a wall of glass with an uninterrupted view of West Hollywood below."

Living Room Produced in 1929, the Alvar Aalto seat with natural timber arms is one of Casale's favorite pieces in the house. The shelving displays a number of his architecture and film publications. "I have quite a collection since I'm also a commercial and music video director. I collect as many books as I can!" He says.

Living Room "I actually admire the Kadinsky print, 'Meeting Point,' in the living space," said Casale. "And I really like the wool mohair mix used on the sofa. It's a substance not used much anymore. This is obviously a great room to amuse my friends and associates when they encounter at night"

Indoor/Outdoor Living Casale noted that this picture illustrates what Neutra does this well: that the "seamless" stream from inside to outdoor space. "This is what I love about his architecture," he explained. "The attractiveness of the home is illustrated by the accuracy of his design."

Kitchen Casale finds the kitchen to be a peaceful place to spend some time. "When I wash my dishes I love looking beyond the window over the sink," he explained. "it is a really relaxing feeling being in this space."

Kitchen Countertop Home restoration specialist James Rega found the Vitrolite to your kitchen countertop in an abandoned art deco theatre in Pennsylvania. "This is a material that was popular from the 1930s," said Casale, who likes to concoct his gourmet dishes here. "I was really impressed by how futuristic the design seemed. He seemed for this material for more than a year!"

Pantry Doors Neutra made the louvered cabinet doors to let air circulate through.

Dining Room Casale loves the pure wood floors in the dining area. "As per Neutra's original specifications, the timber flooring create a rich warmth to counter an otherwise austere, Bauhaus-style room," he said. "They keep it from being cold, and I enjoy that. The diffusion of the sunlight pouring in through Neutra's cloth colours increases the coziness which makes you never want to leave. The colors were custom made, since none are made like this anymore."

Dining Room Table The dining room table is a diversion based on photographs of a black lacquered Neutra-designed dining table. "The chairs were obtained in a furniture voucher," additional Casale. "They have been designed by Mart Stam, a designer popular from the late 1920s. And the 1936 clock designed by Gilbert Rohde on the credenza was designed the same year that the Kun House was completed."

Custom Blinds Custom-made blinds offer privacy for the house's occupants.

Terrace Each level of this Kun House comes with an outdoor terrace. "During the day, I really like to sit here at the living/dining room deck level with my espresso I simply created in my Rosito Bisani espresso maker," said Casale. "On a transparent day, you can see the ocean. It is very special."

Master Bedroom "Neutra never desired any walls to have holes in them, so pictures were hung via wires so that the walls were maintained," said Casale. "He created a precise hauled groove, about 12 inches from the ceiling, from which you hang a wire for your own pictures. He would paint the wall a muted shade of gray up to this groove and then white over it, creating a canopy effect"

Built-In Drawers Built-in drawers flank the bed in the master bedroom. "I really enjoy the pre-Columbian sculpture of a Valdivian owl," said Casale. "I've always been fascinated by the power of owls. My retro home in Palm Desert has owl temples, temples and taxidermy in it. The framed image is a Kandinsky sketch from 1930 created with India ink"

Master Bedroom "In the master bedroom, I utilize the salmon-colored chair and the table next to it for if I want to see," said homeowner Gerald Casale. "I love sitting there and never need to leave. Along with the natural light is indeed warm, also."

Muted Color Palette Casale is a big fan of the color white. "You can never have too much white in your property," he said. "I like to shut the doorway of the master bedroom and also experience the calm solitude there. I also love the built-in drawers, that have no handles. Neutra expected this design fad." The classic light switches are dummy proof: in/on, out/off.

Toilet "It has been 50 years since those sink fittings were fabricated, so that it was really the Holy Grail when we found them," said Casale. "James Rega, whose firm, MDMA, revived the Kun House, had to custom fabricate the fluorescent light fixtures built into the mirror to match the first ones employed by Neutra. They really came out great!"

Bathtub Casale enjoys the solitude the translucent glass from the bathroom supplies. "And the clean white shower curtain looks better than if it had ducks on it," he quipped.

Bathtub Fixtures "These fittings were really hard to find, and the MDMA team were thrilled to locate them," said Casale. "I love the classic, no-nonsense look."

Showerhead Neutra given this classic showerhead in his original design for the home.

Den "I work from the den, producing new ideas for songs and movie projects," said Casale. "I like its clean, uncluttered feel. It makes it easier to focus."

Terrace Away Den Like most rooms in the home, the den opens to a spacious deck.

Home at Night "This is just inside the entrance on the top level," said Casale. "I love being able to find the panorama of Los Angeles lights, stretched in the ocean to the airport."

Rooftop Deck "Looking back toward the shore and the entry foyer, this is the best space for virtually any cocktail party, particularly at golden hour once the sun is setting," said Casale.

Aerial View This aerial shot has been taken in the second-story balcony of a different Neutra-designed home on the West Hollywood hilltop above.
